Each Friday, the youth who were assigned to mentors in various departments of the health care system, experienced education day as a way of exposing them to the broad range of services and careers in health care. As part of that day, Federal Toastmasters was invited to facilitate a Toastmaster's meeting for the young people.

It was a wonderful experience.

Watching these outstanding youths grow in confidence and ability to formulate ideas, lead meetings, and speak in public was a real inspiration.

At the helm of this program was an outstanding and enthusiastic woman named Gretchen Fritz. She invested time, energy, and love into each of her students with a flair for innovation and a commitment to their development. I would recomend her for any local coaching hall of fame.

Unfortunately for Fresno, she is being transferred to a new location with greater responsibilities. She will do well.

Some lessons I learned this summer were:

1. There are pockets of innovation and creativity in places where you may not expect to find them.

2. Everyone brings something to the table of human experience. Even and especially the young among us have much wealth of experience and insight to contribute.

3. Everyone can learn to communicate better. Not everyone will be a professional public speaker, but each person can learn to be a competent communicator

4. That a new generation of leadership is training itself at an accelerated pace and that they bring competencies and skills that are much greater than those of my generation at the same stage of life.Tom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-65374492482160952642007-08-11T17:01:00.001-07:002007-08-11T17:02:40.441-07:00Winston's Churchill's Greatest SpeechThis is a fine example of a man using profound abilities as a communicator to rally an entire nation for a great cause:
Tom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com89tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-44661539777264128972007-03-17T17:15:00.000-07:002007-03-17T17:18:29.697-07:00Tom Filer Hits a Home RunTom Filer gave us some unorthodox advice for success at Friday's meeting. Jones

Calls for "Speech, Speech" can send many men and women into panic and fear. Others may be given an assignment to present information before a group and feel overwhelmed by public speaking anxiety in the run up to the presentation.

The 4 key suggestions here will do much alleviate the problem and assist anyone to control and overcome public speaking anxiety:

1. Thorough Preparation

The biggest antidote to audience fear? Thorough preparation! There is no short-cut.

If you have carefully researched your material so you are convinced it is worth delivering,
and you firmly believe your audience needs to hear it, and you have practiced and practiced the delivery, you can stand up in front of an audience with confidence!

2. Breathing

Control nervousness by taking deep breaths to relax the body. Concentrate on your message and the things you have prepared to present to your audience rather than on your nervousness.

Use positive speech, even in your own thoughts. Instead of saying to yourself, "Boy, do I feel nervous", which only reinforces the feeling, say, "My adrenaline is pumping and I'm going to use it to deliver an unforgettable presentation!"

3. Confidence Visualized

To increase confidence and combat uncertainty use visualization techniques. These can be VERY effective.

Running through the whole presentation including the approach to the speaker's stand, the initial pause, the first few sentences, over and over again in your mind, will create great confidence.

4. End Result Visualization

Include the end result in your visualization exercise.

See yourself having successfully concluded an excellent presentation with the applause of the audience in your ears. See the smiles, hear the compliments afterwards and make them real in your mind.

In a TV interview, Mohammed Ali once explained how he prepared for a fight. He would concentrate his mind on imagining actually being there in the ring, in the stadium, at the venue. He would see himself there at the end of the fight, victorious.

He created a very real scene in his mind with the smells, feelings, sounds, sights, he expected to experience at that moment. He used the phrase 'Future History' to describe what he created in his mind.

Why not create a 'Future History' for yourself before your next presentation and see how it triggers the necessary energy to overcome any feelings of self-doubt.

It may be unrealistic for some individuals to think they will conquer public speaking anxiety completely. Perhaps some public speakers with many years experience can walk in front of an audience without any nervousness at all.

For the majority however, who may only be called on occasionally to speak before a group or an audience, there will always be some anxiety. A realistic expectation regarding public speaking anxiety and following the suggestions above can however do much to control it so it does not overwhelm the speaker.

Michael has compiled an inexpensive coaching manual complete with Analysis Questionnaire: http://www.about-goal-setting.com/public-speaking-coaching-manual.htm

Michael has also personally benefited from this Public Speaking Course ranked No. 1: http://www.about-goal-setting.com/public-speaking-course.htm

For personal development listen to "The Program Of Presidents": http://www.about-goal-setting.com/personal-development.html

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_A._Jones
http://EzineArticles.com/?Public-Speaking-Anxiety:-4-Ways-To-Control-It&id=465420
Tom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-28577363124313574012007-03-10T17:27:00.000-08:002007-03-10T17:32:08.704-08:00Article of Fear of Public Speaking. How To Conquer Public Speaking Fear
By Morton C. Many of us would like to avoid this problem entirely, but this is hard to do. Whether we work alone or with large numbers of people, eventually we will need to speak in public to get certain tasks accomplished. And if we want to be leaders or achieve anything meaningful in our lives, we will often need to speak to groups, large and small, to be successful.

The truth about public speaking, however, is IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE STRESSFUL! If you correctly understand the hidden causes of public speaking stress, and if you keep just a few key principles in mind, speaking in public will soon become an invigorating and satisfying experience for you. Read More!Tom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-76581200956577401782007-03-09T20:09:00.000-08:002007-03-09T20:34:48.501-08:00You Always Learn SomethingI learned a new phrase from Christian Poulsen introduced me to a new concept this morning as we met for Toastmasters: Pastor of Wealth and Blessing.

It has to do with being a steward of these things.

I always learn something at TM - and as a pastor myself, I had never thought of that one.

- tomTom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-64228516915030408212007-03-07T17:28:00.000-08:002007-03-08T07:43:06.089-08:00Meeting TomorrowTomorrow's meeting of Federal Toastmasters is subject to some revision due to member plans and responsibilities. as a;lways, we need to prepare for flexibility.Tom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-13439100665245690802007-03-04T17:16:00.000-08:002007-03-04T17:33:11.319-08:0010 Tips for Successful Public Speaking from Toastmasters InternationalRead them HERE.

Practice them on Fridays at Federal Toastmasters!Tom Simshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02230800786660841582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-24417630011215555222007-03-02T15:17:00.000-08:002007-03-02T15:25:07.090-08:00Reasons to JoinThere are numerous reasons to join Federal Toastmasters!

We are committed to learning, growing, and supporting one another in our professional and personal development as leaders and communicators.

We have the best, most time-honored program on the planet for achieving maximum results in leadership development and communication skills.

We are "plugged-in" to a massive network of relationships and support called Toastmasters International.

We are fun and friendly. The first is for a company in England that writes and sells speeches for multiple ocassions. I once had a book for pastors called, "The Saturday Night Special." It was a collection of outlines for preachers who came to Saturday night without any sermon ideas.

Speech-Writers.com

On the other hand, some of you could do this considering the great speeches I've heard.

My new colleague and friend Marcia Wieder is a leader in the areas of pubic speaking and dream coaching. She has appeared on Oprah and is endoresed by Mark Victor Hansen. She has a very exciting workshops coming in October. It is for those who are serious about becoming successful professional speakers. Click America's Dream Coach -Become an Inspiring Speaker for details. Melaney Shaum and Anna Ho both challenged me. Melaney got my attention with the name of her topic, "Paul Was Wrong." She explained that we don't really put away childish things because of our programming prior to the age of 5.

Then she told us how to put away old programming with three steps.

You should have been there.

Anna spoke defined "entertainment" for us in a fresh and meaningful manner settling on the possibility that love holds our attention more than anything esle in the world.

I was given the opportunity to prepare for tomorrow's speech contest and that was a big help.

Mel Cellini was a masterful first-time Toasmaster.

So ...

What other Toastmasters are blogging?

I found a few - actually quite a few, but I am only sharing a garden variety few here.

Sara Marks is a blogging Toastmaster. It sure works for us! He subtitles his blog, "Personal Development for Smart People.

Speaking of bloggers: Do you remember Guy Kawasaki of Apple fame? He is the guy (excuse the play on words, Guy) who introduced the concept of "evangelism" to the business world. Namely, you enlist your customer-partners (Never call them "consumers") as your best allies to tell your story everywhere. Guy has become one of the early prophets of the value of blogging for business. The big idea is that it creates two-way conversation between a company and its customers, beating focus group marketing by a country mile.

Well, Guy's January 18 entry was an addendum to an article on how to get a standing ovation. He puts in a guarded good word for Toastmasters as point number three:

"Toastmasters. Can't say I know much about them, but I hear nothing but good things. According to his Amazon bio, "Bert Decker is the chairman and founder of Decker Communications, Inc. A major figure in the communications field, he has been featured on the Today Show commenting on the presidential debates of 1992 and 1996. He is the author of the best-selling book You've Got to Be Believed to Be Heard and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and on ABC's 20/20. He lives with his wife in San Francisco, California."

Bert was in Fresno several years ago promoting his study, Speaking with Bold Assurance." I attended his workshop and sat with a judge and a few other high-powered somebodies. Publkic speaking is a hot topic and Toastmasters is on the cutting edge.

Speak with Bold Assurance
Federal Toasmaster's Web Loghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10215393334339797829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-1143832858771508092006-03-31T10:20:00.000-08:002006-03-31T11:20:58.796-08:00Meeting 3-31-2006Tomorrow is April Fool's Day, but there was little foolishness at our Toastmaster's meeting this morning. The club hummed under the toastmastership of Tom Filer (pictured below with Me Cellini and Doug Bloomer) .

Doug Bloomer challenged me with his speech, "You've Come a Long Way - Maybe." While alluding to Virginia Slims commercials from the 60s, he traced the development of our humanity and the never ending goal to keep on growing.

Perhaps, instead of greeting one another with a friendly, "How goes it?" we should ask, "How grows it?"

Mel Celini expaned our awareness of wine making - especially the issue of how good wines are topped off. To my surprise, I learned that use of the cork is not the best method for preserving the best wines.

I did an impersonation of Mayor Byron T. Simpleton of Polecat Hollow. It was a little rough and in the form of a news conference. I learned from the evaluation to state my main idea, even in a story, more clearly at the begining and to vary my voice a bit. I was quite loud and doing the vocal impression put my voice production in the soft palate - bad technique on a good day.

A little more on the inappropriate use of the soft palate is found at this page at the University of New South Wales: Vocal Track Acoustics. As a voice teacher, I know better, but the use of the palate to produce sound has become more and more of a norm because of the popularity of pop music and the mouth sounds that acompany the genre.

The bottom line of vocal production is that sound is produced in the vocal cords - even vowels are formed there. Many thanks to George for helping me remember this and my apologies for the physical pain I inflicted. Toastmaster's is such an excellent venue for learning and growing. I value it more every week.

It was a fun meeting, Miss Anna Ho (see the picture below pictured with Melaney Shaum) did a superb impromptu job of introducing interesting and entertaining table topics around the subject of pajamas. George Muller made us blush a bit with his thoughtful response, but all added to the lively spirit of the meeting.

Federal Toasmaster's Web Loghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10215393334339797829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-1143747524394615252006-03-30T11:21:00.000-08:002006-03-30T12:25:19.723-08:00Of Interest ...
The missing link has an entirely new meaning these days. Without links, we have to do way too much typing to navigate the turbulent waters of cyberspace.

Of course, your key link in this ocean of information is our club's very own turbobase.com .

It is password protected and contains a wealth of information including contact data for club members, club schedules, and .... well, those are the two most important things.

Then there is your LIVE link! For that one, you need to show up at Denny's on Friday mornings at <st1:time minute="15" hour="19">7:15</st1:time> (7 if you are serious, earlier if you are dead serious) for our 1 hour meeting. It will be the highlight of your week. Visitors are welcome! Denny's is at the convergence of Blackstone and Abby at Divisadero near downtown Fresno. I'll volunteer my phone number for directions. It is on until I walk into the meeting: 559-647-2203 .

FYI - I am out of the house by <st1:time minute="0" hour="5">5 AM</st1:time> Friday mornings and offline from 6-6:30. Other than that, if you need something last minute - CALL ME.

Yet another vital link for Toastmasters is our Toastmasters International web site. There are mounds of information there for anyone to rake through. I have found some wonderful resources on that site.

Here are some other links on public speak I found by browsing the Internet:

How to Conquer Public Speaking Fear by Morton C. Ormond M.D.. Yes, he is trying to sell a book, but in the process, he gives some wonderful free information.

Here is another semi-commercial site with a free e-zine: Advanced Public Speaking Institute . There are some fantastic articles there.

Another is School for the Campions.

McGraw-Hill has a site. That's right - the publisher.

A fellow Toastmaster has a site called A Research Guide for Students . Not bad stuff.

That should keep you busy for now - but in case it doesn't, try this link: PastorTomSims.com . In today's entry I recomend a very important new book on blogging for business with some great web sites.

- Tom <grinning>

</grinning>
Federal Toasmaster's Web Loghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10215393334339797829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24431410.post-1143742753236410922006-03-30T10:11:00.000-08:002006-03-30T10:19:13.246-08:00The Power of One
Much has been written about the power of ONE. Here I want to reflect on the power of one sheet of paper placed in one location by one Toastmaster.

Last Friday, in my capacity as VP of Membership, I handed out some flyers - just flat flyers flagrantly flagged to facilitate fraternal furtherance of Federal Toastmaster - invitations to our meetings.

Everyone left with a small stack. Someone placed some in a real estate office and that afternoon I received 1 phone call from a woman looking for a Toastmaster's club. Our time doesn't really work for her, but she may visit. However, she WILL join a club somewhere in Fresno.

That was the result of 8-9 members taking several flyers each and passing them out.

Now - what if we continued and multiplied that effort and added persons invitations to the mix. Our results would multiply and we would - no WILL - find people for whom our meeting time and place is perfect - people like us who enjoy the camaraderie of am organization like ours and value the opportunity to learn and grow.

One leads to another one and to another one and another and another.
Federal Toasmaster's Web Loghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10215393334339797829noreply@blogger.com1
